The name Arduino comes from a bar(named after Arduin of Ivrea) in Ivrea, Italy. The Arduino project started in 2005 to help the students who wanted to learn something new but did not have much money with them, in Ivrea, Italy. At that time, the students used a BASIC Stamp microcontroller.This microcontroller cost was $50 which was a considerable expense for many students. Massimo Banzi, a teacher at Italy’s Interaction Design Institute Ivrea, started this project which aimed at providing a low-cost and easy way for learners and professionals. This project also aimed at creating devices that can easily interact with their environment. A team of five developers worked on the development platform Wiring as a thesis project at IDII which was created by Hernando Barragán in 2003. The Arduino team consisted of Massimo Banzi, David Cuartielles, Tom Igoe, Gianluca Martino, and David Mellis.
With each passing year, new types of Arduino boards appeared, and with every new version of Arduino, it was made more advanced in terms of processor. The evolving family of Arduino has more memory with enhanced input/output features.
The first widely distributed Arduino board, the Diecimila, was released in 2007. The Due, released in 2012, is the first Arduino to utilize a 32-bit ARM Cortex-M3 processor.
